Like Vespas at the time, Lambrettas had either 3 or 4 gears and two-stroke engines with capacities which range from 49 cc to 198 cc. Most two-stroke engines need a blend of oil in the gasoline to be able to lubricate the piston and cylinder.

Unlike the Vespa, that is built with a uni-body chassis pressed from sheets of steel, Lambretta’s were based around a far more rigid tubular frame, although the ‘J’ series model manufactured from 1964 through 1971 did employed a monocoque body. Early versions were to be found in closed, with fully-covered mechanicals or open,
